Do your children a favor - buckle them up. It not only makes sense, it's the law.
Thousands of children die each year due to improper usage or failure to use a child seats in a motor vehicle. It is the leading causes of death among children ages four through fourteen. Many of these fatalities can be prevented if parents became educated and took proper action to protect their children. Thankfully, most states mandate child safety seats. Illinois is no exception. Under the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act children less than eight years of age must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system. An approved restrain system means any device including a booster seat that meets the US Department of Transportation standards designed to restrain, seat or position a children in the vehicle.
Children between the ages of eight and seventeen must wear either a seat belt or be secured in a child safety seat. Bear in mind, that seat belts are intended for adults. Keep older children in a booster seat until the adult seat belts fit properly. The law allows a child weighing more than 40 pounds to be transported in the back seat wearing only a lap belt if the back seat is not equipped with a combination lap and shoulder belt.
Failure to comply with the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act is deemed a petty offense. First time offenders are fined up to $50. The fine is waived if you can demonstrate proof of ownership of an approved restraint system. While the law considers violations a minor offense, you certainly won't if you get in an accident and your child is hurt. Please do your children a favor; follow the law. And, while you're at it buckle yourself up too and be a good role model.
