Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Illinois. You must carry your insurance card in your vehicle and show it upon request by a law enforcement officer. If you are stopped by a police officer and cannot show proof of insurance, you can receive a traffic citation. Be aware, Illinois has a computerized random questionnaire process for verifying insurance. Failure to answer the questionnaire will result in the suspension of your license plates. If convicted of driving without insurance, your license plates can be suspended and you may receive a minimum $500 fine. The consequences could be much more severe if you cause an accident. You could be financially liable for any resulting injuries or property damage. Don't risk it; get coverage.

Illinois state law requires a minimum coverage of 20/40/15 for Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability. These numbers translate into $20,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person up to a total of $40,000 per accident and $15,000 of Property Damage Liability. Be aware, the minimum legal coverage is probably not sufficient to fully protect you from financial loss or liability if you are at fault in an accident. The insurance industry, most consumer groups and most agents typically recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.
